Art + ARCHITECTURE + CULTURE
This is our final individual project for Culture and Civilization and we are require to create a coffee table photobook by choosing one of the theme below :
- Malaysia Architecture
- Fusion Architecture
- Religious Place
- Spaces and people
For a starters we need to create a tab to update our weekly process for out tutor to ensure that we are on our right track. understands what is all these 4 themes and choose the one that is best for me to express and explore. Next, is to choose a place to carry out my following task that is photography taking, understanding what the theme is all abour practically, understand the composition and layout, and definitely understands how to take a good photo.
In this assignment, im require to produce the following items:
- A coffee table book page from 20 to 30.
- A 1 minute video montage of my 10 favourite photos.

For me, i have chosen the theme Spaces and People because that is a challenging theme for me to break through as i need to take to strangers to understand the lifestyle and culture of the place. For a introvert like me, starting a conversation with strangers or even uncle aunties of mine are sort of difficult to me, but with some help from my family, i could talk to them after they help me to break the ice.
The next challenging part is to take photos of people even when they are noticing, i somehow just try to take the photo as is im inviisible and avoid thinking about their judgement towards me. It is a learning process for me to let myself avoid caring too much of what others think and just proceed with the task i need to accomplish, And ya, i found out that i did it pretty good myself.
The site that i visit for my photography shot is tanjung sepat, thats my hometown. The reason why i choose my hometown is because it is near from my current home. That way i could visit again and again if i found out that my photo was not impulsive enough. Next, i could have the opportunity to understand more about my hometown that i didnt even bother to know until this project came along. Other than that, there are actually many interesting places to visit and activities to capture. Lastly, i could visit my grandma that are living alone there now.

After understanding the theories about the theme Spaces People, understanding how to use my new dslr and how to capture a good photograph i put my self into practise and understand how it would be to be a photographer. Now i appreaciate those nice photo that ive seen before, it must have took lots of effort and time to took that one nice photo out that very moment.
Next i have also learn about what is spaces and people myself and how to choose the best photo that best represents my theme out of the hundreds of photos taken
Communicating with stranger at tanjung sepat seems hard to me in the beginning, but with hte guidance of my parents, i started to gain courage to start the conversation with people out there. It is a ncie opportunity and experiece to me to learn how to approach people steps by steps. These communicating skills learn during these project, i believe it would help alot in my future.
Im a IT nooby myself, but through these project i push my self to learn to use softwares like photoshop, indesign and even my dslr. althought the outcome ive learn is not what ice expected to be, but atleast ive learn the some basics to operate these software, its a good beginning for me and a need to brush up more on this weak area of mine.
